We had a meeting at Jaffna Prison with SP Mr. Indrakumar at 3:00 PM. We arrived on time for the appointment, and SP requested that Mr. Mohan join the meeting as well.
I brought along the collection book, which is signed daily by the prison official to confirm the number of drums collected. We discussed a gap in collections during one week in June, which we understand was due to a change in staff within the outsourced collection team. From mid-June onwards, collections resumed daily, with the exception of 23rd June, when there was no food available for collection.
I also clarified that we are no longer raising pigs, and I thanked SP Indrakumar for his past support in providing waste food that helped sustain the pig farm. Going forward, our requirement is only one drum per day. SP Indrakumar advised that they already have another person lined up to collect the other barrels of waste food.
I confirmed that we will continue making monthly payments of LKR 500 per full drum, calculated based on the number of drums collected in the previous month, and paid at the beginning of the following month. This payment arrangement was acceptable to SP.
We also reviewed the Prison Payment Book, which is signed by the respective prison official each time we make a monthly payment. SP Indrakumar noted that, going forward, we should request and receive an official receipt for each payment made to avoid any misunderstandings in the future. I agreed to this and will ensure it’s followed.
SP further informed us that higher authorities had introduced a deposit requirement for those involved in food waste collection. I agreed to this new process and paid the requested deposit of LKR 25,000, which the prison will hold.
In addition, I made the June payment of LKR 20,250, covering 40.5 drums collected during the month.
