Visit: Jaffna Prison – Food Waste Collection , Wednesday 30th July 2025

Visit to Jaffna Prison – Food Waste Collection
Wednesday, 30th July 2025 – 10:50 AM

We visited Jaffna Prison this morning to address an issue with the daily food waste collection. Despite having paid a Rs. 25,000 deposit on Friday, 25th July, during our meeting with SP Indrakumar and Mohan, we have only been receiving half a small drum of food each day. At that meeting, we had confirmed that we required only one full barrel daily, leaving the remaining barrels available for collection by another party.

When we arrived at 10:50 AM, we noticed another party’s vehicle collecting the food waste. We attempted to call Thakshan, who works at the prison, but there was no response. Ravi then went to check how much the other party was collecting and whether a full barrel was being left for us.

Ravi also contacted Mohan, who immediately came down to the collection point with another colleague responsible for overseeing the prison’s food waste distribution. During the discussion, it was revealed that the other party and Ravi knew one another — he had recently restarted his pig farm.

It was agreed that one barrel was indeed being left for us daily. The discrepancy seems to be in what was actually reaching us, as we had only been receiving half a barrel delivered by Umes’ staff. Ravi personally confirmed today that a full barrel was available for us to collect.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure we receive the agreed amount moving forward.

Summary: Investigated shortage of food waste from Jaffna Prison. Confirmed agreement for one full barrel daily; today’s barrel verified. Will monitor deliveries to ensure consistency.
